Yellowknife, Northwest Territories - Land of the Midnight Sun6 Days
Day 1Arrive Calgary, AB
Depart home city to Calgary, home of the famous Calgary Stampede. Time permitting, enjoy a guided city tour including a stop at Canada Olympic Park, home of the famous XV Winter Olympics or Heritage Park, Canada's largest living historical village.
Day 2Calgary / Edmonton, AB
Travel north to the friendly, cosmopolitan city of Edmonton. Upon arrival, visit the Provincial Museum of Alberta, where we learn the story of Alberta's natural and human history including: Aboriginal Peoples, Geology, Wildlife, Live Insects, Dinosaurs, and the Ice Age Mammals. This evening experience the largest entertainment and shopping centre in the world – West Edmonton Mall.
Day 3Edmonton / High Level, AB
Our tour begins as we travel north watching the scenery change from prairie grasslands to lakes and boreal forests. Enroute we visit the Rochfort Bridge Trading Post, and we stop at Mile “0” of the Mackenzie Highway, the only highway to the North West Territories.
Day 4High Level / Hay River, NWT
This morning we reach the 60th Parallel Border Crossing into the North West Territories, a land that is basically untouched. As we enter the North West Territories we will travel the highway dubbed the “Waterfalls Route”. A stop is made at the magnificent Alexander Falls and the picturesque Louise Falls. Upon arrival in Hay River, a local tour guide will board our coach for a guided tour of the “Hub City”. Enjoy that wonderful Northern Hospitality as we tickle your taste buds with a Northern Style Fish Fry Dinner.
Day 5Hay River / Yellowknife, NWT
On departure from Hay River, our first stop will be at the spectacular Lady Evelyn Falls. Passing through the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary, home of a free-ranging herd of wood bison, you have a good chance of seeing these huge animals grazing along the road. You will notice a dramatic change in the landscape as we travel across the Precambrian Shield to Yellowknife, the capital of Canada's vast Northwest Territories. This evening, relax and enjoy a boat cruise along the shores of Great Slave Lake.
Day 6Yellowknife, NWT
Wake up to the sights and sounds of Yellowknife. Today we will be taken on a guided tour of the city to learn about the culture, people and history of the area. Our tour will include the Legislative Assembly Building, the Husky Dog Kennels, a tour of Old Town and the famed Ragged Ass Road. This afternoon is at leisure to visit the many local craft stores and galleries, or you may wish to take an optional Air Flight Tour for a sky view of Yellowknife and the Diamond Mines. This evening, join your tour director for a traditional Northern Style Dinner.
Day 7Yellowknife, NWT
Our day begins with a guided tour of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Of course, no tour to this area would be complete without a stop at the Wildcat Café. This afternoon is at leisure.
Day 8Yellowknife / High Level, AB
Depart Yellowknife and follow Highway 35 South. A visit is made to Fort Providence, famous for its Dene crafts. We enter Alberta at the 60th Parallel Border Crossing and arrive at our destination of High Level for the evening.
Day 9High Level / Edmonton, AB
We continue on to Edmonton. This evening is at leisure.
Day 10Edmonton, AB
Take a guided city tour of Edmonton and get acquainted with Alberta's capital city including the Alberta Legislature Building, Jasper Ave, City Hall, Old Strathcona historical area, Chinatown, The Avenue of Nations, Edmonton's Art District, University of Alberta Campus, and prominent residential areas. In the afternoon, travel a short distance to Elk Island National Park, home to over 40 species of mammals including plains and wood bison, elk, moose, deer and beaver that roam freely in this safari type park. This evening, join your tour director for a farewell Alberta “Beef” Dinner at Northlands – Spectrum – Edmonton's year round Horseracing and Entertainment Centre.
Day 11Edmonton or Calgary to Home Cities
Transfer to International Airport for your flight home.
