Day 1:Home City / Chicago / Elkhart, IN
Arrive in Chicago by early afternoon. Travel aboard a deluxe motor coach to Northern Indiana for a two-night stay in Elkhart. This evening enjoy an old-fashioned country dinner served up for you by an Amish family right inside their own home. (D) Jameson Inn
Day 2:Back Roads Tour Amish Country
Begin your day in Amish country with breakfast followed by a fascinating guided tour of the back roads of Northern Indiana. Shop at the brand new American Countryside Farmers Market in Elkhart. This afternoon visit the Sunrise Orchard in Goshen for a hayride through the orchard followed by a cup of cider. This evening enjoy a Threshers Dinner in the Restaurant Barn, followed by the Amish musical Plain & Fancy or a Broadway classic in the Round Barn Theatre. (B, D)
Day 3:Elkhart / Holland, MI
Depart Amish Country and travel north into the state of Michigan. Arrive in Holland and visit Windmill Island, a beautiful park that includes “De Zwaan”, the 240-year-old authentic windmill from the Netherlands. Experience lunch at Dutch Village including a hands-on baking experience when you make your own “Banket”. Next a Dutch costumed step-on guide boards the coach for a tour of historic Holland. Dinner tonight will be in one of Holland’s choice restaurants, followed by a presentation by a local lady Miller who was trained in the Netherlands. (B, L, D) Holiday Inn Express
Day 4:Holland / Frankenmuth, MI.
Michigan’s Little Bavaria is on the horizon as we travel today to Frankenmuth, Michigan. The visit to Frankenmuth will begin with a guided riding tour followed by a sausage stuffing experience at Willi’s Sausage Haus. Lunch is included then head to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland for a very unique shopping experience. Prepare for an evening that will include a Tour and Tasting at the Black Forest Brau Keller, a Pretzel Rolling experience and a German style dinner at the Bavarian Inn. (B, L, D) Drury Inn
Day 5:Frankenmuth / Detroit, MI
After breakfast, we motor on down to the Motor City of Detroit. The first stop today is at St. John’s Armenian Church for a tour of this 75-year-old structure, followed by a cooking class to prepare an authentic Armenian dish and lunch. This afternoon visit the Motown Museum, tracing the history of the “Motown Sound” and its influence on the music world. A tour of the GM Ren Center shows you the influence General Motors has had on Detroit, then climb aboard Detroit’s People Mover for a ride to a Cool Jazz Dinner at Sweet Lorraine’s Café. Day 6:Detroit
Prepare for a full day of touring based on Detroit’s influence in the auto industry. It begins with a tour of the Henry Ford Estate. 2008 marks the 100th Anniversary of Ford’s Model T car, and your next stop is the Ford Rouge Factory, the plant that produces the modern F-150 pickups. (The Rouge Tour can be affected by production schedules and may require adjusted tour times.) This afternoon you have your choice of exploring the wonderful Henry Ford Museum, or wandering about the fascinating Greenfield Village. To cap off your “Day of the Automobile”, gather with new friends for a farewell dinner at the historic Dearborn Inn and be part of an interactive presentation that will feature Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and Thomas Edison. Day 7:Detroit / Home City
This morning your last activity will be the Arsenal of Democracy Discovery City Tour in Warren. Learn how the automakers became tank makers during the 1940s, and how the Army of today compares to the ones of yesterday. By early afternoon transfer to the Detroit airport for your flight home. (B) Flights should not be scheduled prior to 3:00 pm.
